Care of your pearls
Both natural and cultured pearls are organic substances grown in molluscs or mussels. Not only is this is the secret of their warm, silvery shimmer but also the reason that pearls aren’t as durable as gem stones that have formed over millennia in the earth’s crust.
Environmental influences affecting the beauty of the pearls can be prevented with proper handling and care. By heeding the following tips the beauty of your pearls will be maintained.
1) Cosmetics, perfume and sweat can damage pearls thus reducing their shine.
Regular cleaning of the pearls with a soft cloth, preferably after each time they are worn,
will remove the harmful substances. From time to time it is also useful to clean them in a
special solution which you can obtain from your local jeweller.
2) The high quality silk cord on which the pearls are strung has a little give and therefore the
necklace can stretch. Your jeweller can re-string the pearls and at the same time check
the clasp for safety.
3) Other pieces of jewellery can damage and scratch the pearls’ surface. It is best to keep
your pearls separate from other jewellery when not being worn.
4) Your pearls are best kept worn round the neck. If you need to transport or store them
then keep them in a silk or velvet bag.
By heeding this advice you will maintain the shine and beauty of your pearls for many years.
