The Final Journey:
From Ocean to Display Cabinet.
Following the harvest the cultured pearls are processed.
They are initially washed and graded into different sizes.
An expert will then determine what type of jewellery the pearls are best suited to.
Pearls destined to enhance broches, rings, pendants or tie pins are only drilled through to the middle. Pearls destined for necklaces are drilled right through.
Any organic contamination is removed with a special solution.
After a more accurate sizing through a variety of special sieves the pearls are sorted into quality classifications.
The expert will gauge the colour and shape, the shimmer, the thickness of the mother of pearl layer and the purity of the surface area.
The pearl can be any imaginable colour: from pink to silver, champagne, cream and gold to green, blue or grey. An oyster can produce a pearl in a huge colour range.
